Course Applicability
 
The following definitions will aid in conducting a self-examination to determine whether documentation provided for coursework taken evidences that the courses meet the course requirements for certification. Course requirements are these:

Principles of Vocational Evaluation

Course content should include rehabilitation issues in the areas of client and work site evaluation, principles of case management, behavioral observation, individualized vocational evaluation planning, ethics, use of available support service options and report development. Occupational information that covers career options and principles of case management should be a part of selected course content. Courses in the general principles of vocational evaluation should provide information on the various disabling conditions.

Possible titles include Introduction to Vocational Evaluation, Philosophy and Principles of Rehabilitation, Introduction to Rehabilitation Services, Foundation of Vocational Evaluation, or Introduction to Rehabilitation.

Standardized Assessment

Coursework in standardized testing or psychometrics provides an orientation to testing and measurement principles including test selection, administration, scoring, interpretation and ethical use. Content should encompass the use of standardized measurements such as achievement, aptitude, temperament, interests, and vocational skills. Courses must provide coverage of more than one specific test or system.

Acceptable courses might have titles such as Tests and Measurement, Individual Appraisal, Standardized Testing, Developmental Assessment, Vocational Evaluation, Research Methods and Statistics, Psychoeducational Assessment, Rehabilitation Assessment and Evaluation, or Assessment Procedures.

Occupational Information

Coursework in occupational information provides information regarding the general scope of employment, including assessment of the labor market, work environment, job duties, and work place standards. This content area encompasses techniques to facilitate job accommodations/modifications, career exploration, and job placement. Collection, evaluation, and use of occupational resource information as well as knowledge of common benefit systems (e.g., SSDI, workers' compensation) and the use of web-based sources are significant elements of occupational information. Course content should include standardized occupational information and classification systems.

Sample course titles include The World of Work, Placement Strategies in Rehabilitation, Career Development and Job Placement, and Occupational Analysis.

Implications of Disability

Information related to the impact of disability on the vocational functioning of the individual is considered in this area. Aspects that apply are psychological and medical aspects of the disability, vocational implications of pharmacology, substance abuse, addictions, ecological variables, cultural implications, functional skills, community resources, support programs, and assistive technology services or devices.

Course titles that may include implications of disability information are Medical Aspects of Disability, Psychological Aspects of Disability, Functional Aspects of Disabilities, and Exceptionalities in Special Education Programs.

Professional Communication

Coursework in professional communication in vocational evaluation includes counseling and interviewing, mediation and collaboration, and evaluation report development, coordination, preparation, and communication.

These content areas are most often taught in vocational evaluation and rehabilitation counseling introductory and advanced courses and include such course titles as Case Management, Counseling Theories, Vocational Evaluation Methods, Rehabilitation Counseling, Fundamentals of Counseling, Interviewing Techniques and Methods, Vocational Evaluation Techniques, Vocational Evaluation Planning and Reporting, Practices in Vocational Evaluation, and Principles and Techniques of Rehabilitation Services. This content area may also be found in a practicum in vocational evaluation.

Professional communication coursework should not be limited to courses that focus solely on psychological profiles or reports, case or progress notes, employability plans (e.g., individualized evaluation plans [IEP] or rehabilitation plans), social or family histories, or basic technical writing.
