Benefits of Certification
|
The primary purpose of this certification process is to provide assurance that
those professionals engaged in vocational evaluation, career assessment or work
adjustment meet acceptable standards of quality. The existence of such standards
is considered to be in the best interest of consumers, other practitioners,
individuals in allied professions and the public. Through their participation
in both the certification and certification maintenance programs, practitioners
are able to bring about a higher level of performance and qualification throughout
the profession.
It is not the Commission's intent to certify that any individual is suitable for employment or to impose staffing requirements on any agency. Rather, the objective is to establish a standard or measure of professionalism that may be used by any interest group, agency or individual with regard to assessment services. Persons who earn certification have demonstrated that they possess at least an acceptable minimum level of competence (as determined by the Commission) with regard to the practice of their profession. It is intended to help achieve widespread acceptance of the certified designation by legislators, employers, consumers, peers, other human service professionals and the general public in order to promote and assure high quality practices and services. The initial certification is valid for five years. It is achieved by satisfying specific educational and/or employment requirements and then passing an examination. The Commission does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or marital status in processing applications for certification. As the profession is a dynamic one which is constantly evolving, the Commission has a certification renewal program. Persons who are certified are required to demonstrate their continuing professional development at five year intervals. For the most part, the renewals are based on continuing education activities, although other options are available. This type of certification maintenance is considered an essential part of an effective credentialing process and maintenance of a profession. |
